A statistical bias in stellar reddenings, suggested by Holmberg (1974), is investigated. In a simple theoretical model formulae are derived for the color bias in terms of (1) dispersions in the intrinsic color determination and in the relation between the intrinsic color and absolute-magnitude, and (2) slope a-prime in this relation. The predicted distance dependent effect is revealed for A- and F-stars in the sample of Hill et al. (1982) in the direction of the north Galactic pole. It is concluded that hidden behind the bias there is, in fact, a significant polar reddening (and extinction) increasing with the z-distance and possibly reaching at about z = 400 pc an average value of greater than 0.15 mag, close to what is suggested by IRAS data and de Vaucouleur's model.
