A digital photographic reduction technique is described for determining a correlation between two stellar spectrograms digitized with a microdensitometer system. Operational principles of the reduction technique are outlined, applications of the technique for relative Zeeman- and Doppler-shift determinations are discussed, and examples are given in which the Zeeman spectra of two magnetic stars and the Doppler shifts in the spectra of three other stars were evaluated. It is noted that a modified version of the reduction technique can be used to obtain radial velocities from objective-prism plates. Various errors associated with the reduction technique are assessed, and the advantages and disadvantages of the technique are summarized.
