The proposed model allows one to quantify several issues in fast photometry, such as the respective contributions of the main noises, the minimum stellar variation that can be detected with a given confidence level, etc..., for any given star's magnitude, astronomical site and telescope parameters. These results are applied to two Indian sites, namely Manora Peak (existing site: model validation) and Devasthal (in construction: performances evaluation). Because the proposed model highlights and accounts for the mixed Poisson (MP) nature of the noise (photon noise mixed by scintillation), different detection regimes are clearly evidenced. We further discuss the MP noise and the scintillation problem for exoplanet detection.
