The Einstein field equations for an anisotropic fluid in a static axisymmetric space-time are investigated theoretically. The derivation of the equations is reviewed; additional assumptions are introduced; an exact two-parameter analytical solution is obtained; and its properties are briefly discussed. For alpha x beta = 0, the solution is found to reduce to a physically meaningful one-parameter solution; e.g., an anisotropic fluid core. The need for a corresponding shell solution is indicated.
