Optical and near-infrared observations of a nearby (about 10 pc), low-temperature M dwarf star, discovered as a by-product of the APM high-redshift quasar survey are presented. The infrared observations place this object, BRI0021-0214, among the lowest luminosity stars yet discovered, with a bolometric luminosity of about 14th magnitude (10 exp-4 solar luminosity) and an effective temperature of 2250 K.
