We present a characterization of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Spitzer Space Telescope's InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) photometric system. We confirm that stars with higher mass loss rates are redder in colors involving the 8.0 micron band while colors computed with other bands are strongly influenced by photospheric dust and molecular features. We find that carbon and S-type stars are generally more luminous than the O-rich stars, in agreement with their expected mass class. The period of AGB stars of Mira or semiregular variability type is only loosely correlated with the luminosity of the star --- stars with longer period tend to have higher luminosity. We do, however, find a tight period-color relation for the semiregular variables, which is not observed in Miras. This suggests that semiregular variables lack hot dust responsible for the infrared excess in the IRAC bands for the Miras. This is perhaps due to a discontinuous mass loss process for semiregulars as proposed in Marengo et al. (2001), in contrast to the continuous mass loss rates observed in Miras.
