Is the general velocity distribution of M31 halo stars smooth, or is it clumpy, perhaps consistent with much of the halo being the fossil debris of disrupted satellites? We present new results from on an ongoing spectroscopic survey with Keck/DEIMOS. We report on the kinematics of bright red giant branch stars in nine M31 halo fields along the major and minor axes, ranging in projected galactocentric radius from 10 to 100 kpc. Our sample consists of approximately 250 stars that are likely to be members of M31's outer halo (R > 20 kpc) and about 100 stars in an intermediate-radius halo field at R ˜ 10 kpc. Even in fields that are well removed from the giant southern stream (Ibata et al. 2001), the velocity distribution appears to be dominated by clumps, rather than being smoothly distributed. We also report on the global velocity field of the M31 halo.
Data presented herein were obtained at the W.M. Keck Observatory, which is operated as a scientific partnership among the California Institute of Technology, the University of California and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. We are grateful to the DEIMOS instrument team at UCSC. This work is supported by NSF grants AST-0307931 and AST-0307966.
