The recent discoveries of large, bright Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) provide a unique opportunity to study the surface composition of these objects in greater detail using ground-based telescopes. We present here on visible spectra of 24 KBOs obtained with the Double Spectrograph on the 200-inch Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory between January, 2005 and April, 2007. The spectra cover wavelengths between 0.4 and 1.0 microns with as spectra resolution of 200. We examined the spectra for evidence of mineral and ice species commonly detected on small solar system bodies and icy satellites. In addition to the visible spectra, we have obtained near-infrared (NIR) spectra using the Keck Telescopes for all objects in our survey. We report on our findings for the visible data and discuss how they relate to the trends previous discovered in our NIR data. In particular, we address the visible spectral characteristics of the KBOs which have been identified through their icy NIR specta and dynamics as members of 2003 EL61's collisional family
