Spectral line intensity measurements in seven Small Magellanic Cloud planetaries were made with the image photon counting system at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Measurements are analyzed by conventional procedures with the following results: mean He/H = 0.106; log mean N(X)/N(H) + 12 = 7.31 (N), 8.14 (O), 7.55 (Ne). Abundances of sulphur and argon are consistent with values of H II regions. Nitrogen and perhaps helium are enhanced in abundance with respect to H II regions, although the effects are smaller than those suggested by previous observers. Abundances of oxygen and neon are probably similar to those in H II regions. Some implications for element-building histories in the Small Magellanic Cloud are explored.
