Several spectra of the double-subgiant binary system AR Lac obtained both during and outside of primary eclipse are examined. It is found that a disk (or shell) exists around the secondary star. The secondary star shows evidence of a high level of chromospheric activity, which produces strong Ca II H and K emissions. The secondary is moderately underabundant in most metals, while the primary has solar-type abundances. These results are discussed in the context of the peculiarities seen in AR Lac itself and in the RS Canum Venaticorum binaries.
