We propose to obtain spectroscopic observations and radial velocities for a sample five runaway O-stars in the southern sky. These stars were probably ejected from their birthplaces by a close gravitational encounter with another binary or by the explosion of a supernova in a close binary system. In the former case we expect them to be generally single objects while in the latter case they may harbor neutron star or black hole companions. We recently discovered evidence of low mass binary companions to two northern runaway stars that we suggest have neutron star companions. Their orbital dimensions are too large for significant gas accretion by the neutron star, so they are the X-ray quiet counterparts of the often X-ray bright, massive X-ray binaries. Here we propose to search for other such examples among a group of runaways that have been neglected by observers for several decades.
