The dependence of the degree of polarization of Hα and Hβ emission in the solar chromosphere during solar flares on the energy of an incident proton beam is calculated assuming that the origin of the observed linear polarization is collisional. Estimates of the lower boundary for the energy of the proton beam are obtained using a model for the kinetics of the propagation of fast protons inside solar-flare magnetic loops together with spectropolarimetric Hα and Hβ observations.
