We present long-slit spectrophotmetry of some 40 strongly interacting or merging galaxies, selected from the atlas of Arp (1966) and the ultraluminous IRAS galaxies of Sanders et al. (1988). These galaxies show a diverse range of phenomena, from elliptical galaxies with no activity to starburst galaxies and AGN. Particularly interesting are a set of mergers whose spectra resemble those of distant 'E+A' galaxies, possibly indicating a recent phase of massive star formation. We also examine the distribution of [OII] line emission in these galaxies, which differs significantly from that of nearby, 'normal' galaxies; and we compare the spectral characteristics of the optically-selected and IRAS-selected portions of the merger sample.
