Though rare objects, damped Lyα absorbers contain the bulk of the neutral hydrogen in the Universe. Their HI column densities (NH I ≥ 2 × 10^20 atoms cm^-2) are comparable to what we see along a typical line of sight in the Milky Way. They provide an important piece of the puzzle in the formation history of galaxies since measurements of the neutral gas in these systems and studies of their kinematics place direct constraints on cosmological models and galaxy formation theories. Are they rapidly rotating big disks? Are they protogalactic clumps? We hope to help answer these questions by adding 20-25 damped absorbers to the current sample of 12 with redshifts z > 3.5. This project has 4 parts: (1) Discovery of z> 4 QSOs to use as probes for damped systems. This is complete with ~ 50 new objects discovered in the last 3 years including 23 from our survey at Las Campanas. (2) Moderate resolution spectroscopy to identify candidate damped absorption systems. This is what we desire to do at CTIO. In two observing runs at WHT and one at CTIO in the past 12 months we have observed 2/3 of the sample. We request one more run at CTIO to finish the observations. (3) High resolution spectroscopic follow-up at very large telescopes. (4) Identification of the counterparts via deep ground-based and HST studies.
