The acquisition of axial rotation by a planet during its growth is considered. Values for the regular and random components of the momentum of axial rotation are determined using a time-dependent function for the distribution of bodies according to mass and velocity. It is shown that the relatively large inclinations of the planetary axes and the retrograde rotation of certain of the planets derive from the large value of the random component of rotational momentum. For planets not slowed by tidal friction, the dependence found of the specific rotational momentum on the planetary mass is in agreement with that observed.
