Scientific paper
We propose to take snapshot STIS spectra of 27 quasars with redshift in the range 1.7 -- 3. The goal is to find quasars bright enough in the ultraviolet for spectroscopic follow-up in the range 900 -- 1200 Angstrom . This follow-up would allow the measurement of the ionized helium absorption in the intergalactic medium in the redshift range 2.1 -- 2.9, and the possible detection of high-ionisation metal line systems. The proposed survey should extend the small number of suitable targets already known, allowing a test of the homogeneity of the ionized helium absorption. A potential brighter target with significant void in its Lyman forest would increase the possibility of distinguishing between the absorption from discrete clouds or a truly diffuse component of the IGM.
