The motion of an inviscid isothermal plasma under the influence of gravity along the lines of force of an axially symmetric magnetic field was studied. The solutions of the MHD equations are compared with observations of the Evershed motion in H alpha. The flow covers a more extended area and has a higher velocity along lines of force which extend higher up. The velocity rises rapidly with distance from the axis, reaches a maximum near the region where the magnetic field is horizontal and subsequently decreases slowly. The distance of the maximum velocity region from the axis increases with height. The general behavior of the solutions agrees with the observations, which show that the maximum is located within the penumbra in the photosphere and outside the penumbra in the chromosphere.
