Those aspects of the observed features of the outburst of V1016 Cygni are outlined which must be explained by any successful model of the object. A single-star model consistent with current optical, IR, and radio observations is proposed whereby V1016 Cyg was originally a long-period variable, ejected material at a fairly constant rate over several hundred years to produce a neutral nebula with an inverse-square density distribution, ceased the ejection process some time shortly before the brightening, and experienced rapid ionization of the entire nebula. A distance of approximately 4.2 kpc is derived from the radio data and optical history; the mass of the entire nebula is estimated to be about 0.017 solar mass. Evidence for a stellar wind is examined, two apparently distinct dust components associated with the nebula are inferred, and properties of the central star are discussed. It is concluded that V1016 Cyg is probably a young low-mass planetary nebula produced by radiation pressure acting on the dust grains formed in the atmosphere of the precursor M-type star.
