The possibility is considered of using stimulated emission or some other process to amplify an arbitrary quantum state, i.e., to produce several copies of a quantum system, each having the same state as the original. An analysis is carried out for the case of a photon of arbitrary polarization. It is shown that the linearity of quantum mechanics forbids such replication and that the same prohibition applies to any other kind of quantum system characterized by an arbitrary state. It is concluded that the impossibility of cloning photons prohibits faster-than-light communication by a scheme based on replication of the polarization of single photons.
