The present study of the restricted elliptic planar three-body problem near first-order resonance employs a simplified averaged Hamiltonian which is truncated in first order for the eccentricities of one asteroid and the planet Jupiter, and gives attention to the effects of Juoiter's eccentricity in first order. The simplified model, in which both eccentricities' long-period terms are neglected, allows a direct characterization of asteroid motions and yields a qualitative description of the motion of first-order resonant asteroids. The quantitative results of Schubart (1982) for the Hilda group could not, however, be reproduced.
