Based on recent observational and numerical evidences on the fractal nature of the large-scale galaxy distribution, we introduce a family of simple multifractal cascades (called alpha-models), which provide a dynamically motivated model of the density perturbation field delta rho/rho produced by gravitational clustering. The mass function of collapsed objects is easily generated as well. The specific model discussed in this work is physically rooted in the nonlinear gravitational evolution of density peaks; we also mention how the present approach may be used to exploit the properties of the structures generated in both CDM and seeded HDM scenarios.
