The character of a solar eclipse depends on a large number of parameters related to the Earth(Moon(Sun system, and in order to work out the details a significant amount of computation is usually required. This paper provides a simplified description in terms of two parameters only. From this description the relationship between the various eclipse types is simple to understand, and it will also be shown that an estimate of the relative frequencies of different eclipse types can be derived. It must be emphasised that the purpose of the paper is to derive simple results rather than achieve a high degree of accuracy.
