A telescope has been built, which will, after being set up on a group of stars, automatically cycle between them, taking photometric readings. This introductory paper gives an overview, describing the system in general terms, the sequence of system development and the results achieved so far. Parts II and III will give a detailed description of the system, concentrating on hardware and software respectively.
