A simple method is presented by which photometric data may be obtained to any given reasonable accuracy with a telescope equipped with a small on-line computer. The method is based on Poisson statistics, and takes account of the errors present if the sky signal is comparable to that from the star, and of short-term variations in the transparency or sky background. The program monitors the incoming data and calculates the required number of integrations on (sky + star) and on sky. It informs the observer if any untoward event is occurring. The method should be ideal for persons in possession of, or having access to, a telescope equipped with a small home or office computer which is capable of communication with the photometer.
