It is pointed out that the location of the solar system within the Milky Way is unfortunate in at least two respects, taking into account the concealment of the hub of the Galaxy and the impossibility to distinguish clearly the Milky Way's spiral arms. The significance of the Milky Way's flattened shape is considered along with the increase in the 'metal' deficiency in stars as a function of the distance from the galactic center, the characteristics of stellar Population I and II, gas and dust clouds, and differences in stellar lifetimes. A description of four edge-on galaxies is also provided, giving attention to galaxy NGC 891, NGC 4631 in Canes Venatici, NGC 4762 in Virgo, and NGC 4565 in Coma Berenices. Aspects related to the revolution of astronomy produced by the advent of electronic detectors are also examined.
