The Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), which will operate aboard the Space Shuttle Orbiter on missions lasting from 7 to 14 days, is described with emphasis on the extent to which cryogenically cooled telescope technologies developed for the Infrared Astronomy Satellite will be directly applicable to SIRTF system. Science instruments carried by the SIRTF will be provided with (1) a spectral range of 1-1000 microns, (2) a 3-arcsec diffraction limit, (3) a field-of-view of 7 arcmin, (4) square wave space chopping from 0 to 20 Hz, and (5) image motion compensation to 0.25 arcsec. Attention is given the simplification of science instrument interfaces, the computer-controlled polishing of the beryllium mirrors, and cryogenic/vacuum testing of IR telescope optics.
