Stepped multislit observations of forbidden O III 5007 A emission line profiles of the Herbig-Haro-like object M 16-HH1 were carried out with the Manchester echelle spectrometer on the Isaac Newton telescope, in order to measure the motions within M 16-HH1 and its close vicinity. In addition, direct images of the field were obtained through filters centered on several nebular emission lines. A sharp bright ridge out to a heliocentric radial velocity of +170 km/sec was found to occur in the positional-velocity arrays over M 16-HH1, associated with a fainter filamentary region of high speed gas at intermediate radial velocities. A jet/bow shock mechanism is considered to be the feasible explanation for the generation of these localized motions.
