A study of microdensitometer configurations and the tradeoffs among them was conducted in connection with the development of the Guide Star Selection System (GSSS) for the Space Telescope (ST). GSSS operations are to be based on a new catalog, called the ST Guide Star Catalog (ST GSC). Microdensitometer scans of approximately 1500 plates obtained from the Palomar and the UK Schmidt telescopes are to provide the basic data for constructing the ST GSC. Attention is given to project-specific sampling requirements, the shaped-aperture configuration, an ad hoc implementation, and the isophotal approximation. Based on the project's need for an in-focus PDS scanning configuration with approximately isotropic response and small aliasing, the concept of the shaped aperture was developed.
