Results of experiments on the vertical extent and magnitude of variations in D-region electron density responsible for anomalies in the distribution of ionospheric radio wave absorption are presented. Experimental measurements consisted of vertical radiosonde observations, measurements of radio wave absorption and direct measurements of electron concentrations by dc probes carried on board meteorological rockets, all of which were performed from a research vessel crossing the Pacific Ocean between latitudes of 14 and 0.02 deg N and longitudes of 144 to 173 deg W. The phenomenon of a long-lived significant enhancement (or decrease) in D region electron concentrations indicated by the observation of radio damping in regions of the equatorial ionosphere is confirmed by in situ rocket measurements of electron density. The enhancement is found to be particularly marked at altitudes of 72 to 83 km, where enhancements of electron densities by a factor of 3 to 5 relative to normal levels are observed.
