The 2-m telescope to be supported by a high-altitude balloon is described in terms of hardware components with attention given to alignment technique and the preliminary results of optical performance. The full CFRP telescope and primary mirror are described in detail in terms of the mass and thermal-stability requirements. The primary has six petals that are actively controlled and provide surface accuracy better than 10 microns and an areal mass of less than 20 kg/sq m. Each petal is supported by three linear actuators with three DOF provided by a piston and two tilts; a control algorithm actuates the mirror supports based on data from displacement sensors. The mirror geometry can thereby be maintained at optimal conditions regardless of the environmental conditions and provide submillimetric data by means of an antenna with a low areal mass.
