We have continued to improve upon the filter devoloped by P. N. Appleton, P.R. Siqueira and J. P. Basart (A. J., 106, 1664, 1993) for the Infrared Astronomical Satellites (IRAS) images which attempted to extract the Galactic ``cirrus'' emission. Some problems remained in that method with the filter design and results discussed in that paper. A systematic method for designing the filter is proposed and implemented in this paper. The basis for this approach is that the information obtained in the morphological operations from the image under study is used to classify the pixels in the image into several classes. The particular morphological operation in our study is ``opening'' with increasing sized structuring elements. The features we use to classify the pixels in the image are the differences of two opening images with two sequential sizes. Based on the classification, a filter which removes some specific features and retains others is obtained. The improvements in the filtering results and the flexibility in the filter design show how this method can be applied to image processing in other scientific fields.
