Image-tube spectra of seven cool maser stars, obtained in the spectral region from 9200 to 9460 A with a dispersion of 8 A/mm, are searched for certain water-vapor absorption lines. The stars examined include VY CMa, R Leo, R Cas, U Ori, TW Peg, PZ Cas, and S Per. No systematically Doppler-displaced H2O spectrum is observed in any of these stars, and no positive identification of stellar H2O is made. Upper limits for the relative water columns in the stars and their extended envelopes are estimated along with the thermodynamic factor required to convert such a column to its equivalent for water molecules in all quantum states. The limits obtained are found to be about two orders of magnitude lower than previously reported values. Some possible reasons for low H2O in stellar photospheres and envelopes are enumerated.
