The 305 m Arecibo telescope has been used to search for radio-frequency hyperfine transitions of vibrationally excited orthohydrogen ions. The sources observed were two of the shocked molecular clouds in the supernova remnant IC 443 and the interstellar clouds in the line of sight to the Crab Nebula. The best upper limits to the column densities in the observed transitions were ≡1016cm-2, implying a ratio of H2+ to H2 of less than ≡5×10-4.
