An experiment intended to detect high-energy (5 x 10 to the 23th eV) gamma-ray bursts from celestial sources is reported. The apparatus consists of four 20-cm deep 1-m square liquid scintillation detectors each viewed by a photomultiplier set at a threshold of 0.33 of the average pulse height for a vertically penetrating incident cosmic ray muon, located at the corners of an 11-m square. All events in which three or more air showers occurred with intershower separation times of 10 msec or less were selected by the detection system, with bursts of five or more showers considered significant. In an effective operation time of 4.78 x 10 to the 7th sec, no significant bursts were detected, implying an upper limit at the 99% confidence level of 3.4 x 10 to the -11th per sq m per sec per ster to the flux of gamma-ray bursts characterized by at least five gamma-ray photons of energy greater than 5 x 10 to the 13th eV, and an upper limit of 2700 mini-black hole explosions per cu pc per year.
