We present a survey of the M81 Group which aims to detect dwarf galaxies in a group environment with unprecedented completeness to a limit of M_R -7. The observed number density of dwarf galaxies in different environments provides stringent constraints on galaxy formation and evolution models. Observations of the Local Group have found an order of magnitude fewer dwarf galaxies than expected based on currently accepted cosmological models. This discrepancy has been noted in other environments as well, with evidence emerging that lower density regions contain fewer dwarfs per giant galaxy, in further contrast to model predictions. Meanwhile, ongoing deep searches around the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are starting to turn up larger numbers of very faint and low mass dwarf satellites. However, no complete census of these faint and low surface brightness dwarfs has been obtained in any environment. This is due to the great difficulty in detecting such faint objects, the limitations in establishing group/cluster membership, and the sky coverage required to survey the nearest dwarfs. We present methods and results from our 60 square degree CFHT/MegaCam survey of the M81 Group. Residing at a distance of only 3.6 Mpc, stars near the tip of the red giant branch resolve over the low surface brightness diffuse main sequence population light. Any galaxy with a resolved giant population, no matter how faint the galaxy, is detected. The tip of the red giant branch is used to measure galaxy distances. In addition, M81 is distant enough that our areal coverage extends out to and beyond the second turnaround radius for the group. We describe the survey and the properties of the newly discovered candidate group members.
