In a grand census of stars, galaxies and clusters in our local universe, about half of the baryons at low redshift remain unaccounted for. Theory suggests that these "missing baryons" are in the form of gas in the temperature range 1E5-1E7 K, lying in moderately over-dense regions, such as the filaments connecting groups or clusters of galaxies. One of the best ways of detecting this gas is through absorption line studies. X-ray telescopes have devoted tremendous amounts of observing time with only tentative results. An alternate approach is to use radio telescopes to measure the NVII hyperfine line against the continuum of bright background AGNs. Thanks to the Compact Array Broadband Backend (CABB) upgrade, the fractional bandwidth of the ATCA is large enough to carry out a sensitive absorption search for this gas.
