Scientific paper

The paper reports a search for the 12.3-micron S(2) rotational line of molecular hydrogen in the Orion Nebula. No line stronger than 0.0035 erg/s per sq cm/sr was observed at the location of the peak 2.12-micron S(1) vibrational line emission. If the observed vibrational lines are due to a shock propagating in a dense medium, the upper limit implies a shock velocity greater than about 5 km/s in the absence of extinction, or 10 km/s with a visual extinction of 30 mag.
