An upper limit of not greater than 0.00036 on the ratio of the line antenna temperature to the system temperature is obtained as a result of a search for carbon recombination lines (n of about 540) at 42 MHz toward S140. This limit indicates that the broadening of the absorption line C640-alpha is caused by large-scale motions with velocities greater than about 60 km/s. To account for the absence of C540-alpha and for the large width of C640-alpha, a model is suggested in which the lines are formed in clouds of neutral hydrogen (nH = 20 cu cm) distributed along the line of sight.
