Perhaps counter-intuitively, the ~1" angular resolution of the ATCA can be used to search for the clear signatures of jet precession in AGN that are usually observed at milliarcsecond-scale resolution using VLBI. Simple ATCA measurements of the total and polarised flux from highly core-dominated AGN can reveal sinusoidal variations of the total flux and polarisation position angle that are explained in a straightforward way by relativistic beaming models. We have recently detected such variations in a BL Lac object, PKS 0003-066. We propose to monitor a sample of ~50 BL Lac sources with the ATCA to obtain the statistics of jet precession. From the statistics we aim to shed some light on the mechanism responsible for jet precession, candidate mechanisms including binary black holes and radiation pressure warped accretion disks.
