We propose to search for chromospheric mass flows or stellarwinds from the metal-poor halo field giant HD216143 using HRS spectraof the 2800 Angstrom Mg II h and k lines. The emission cores ofthese lines are formed, in part, in the upper regionsof the extended chromosphere of a red giant, and theirprofiles are sensitive to mass motions within thechromosphere. In addition, circumstellar material can producea blueshifted absorption feature in the wings of thechromospheric emission profiles. Thus the Mg II h and k emissionlines provide good diagnostics of mass outflows from red giants.By comparing the results for HD216143 with those for several globularcluster giants of higher intrinsic luminosity observed with HRS inCycle 1 we plan to address the following questions concerningmass loss from Population II red giants: a) Over whatluminosity range on the giant branch does mass loss takeplace? b) Do the characteristics of the mass loss change withevolution to higher stellar luminosities?
