A radio search for neutral hydrogen in nine unusually red elliptical galaxies is described. The search was carried out using the Mk 1-A 76-meter radio telescope at Jodrell Bank. The telescope was operated in a beam switching mode with reference positions typically one degree away from the source in the Right Ascension. Both hands of circular polarization were analyzed in a 10-MHz bandwidth (2100 km/s) using an 1024-channel autocorrelation spectrometer. HI emission was detected from three single-dish beam positions containing the galaxies NGC 5898/5903, 1199, and 7464. The HI emission profile of NGC 5898/5903 shows a broad velocity width of 560 km/s and an HI mass of 2.4 x 10 to the 9th solar mass. It is shown that the HI emission from NGC 1199 7464 is not directly associated with elliptical galaxies and more probably lies in or around the companion galaxies in the telescope beam. VLA observations of NGC 5898/5903 are also presented, and the factors leading to the unusual distribution of HI are discussed.
