Recent observations have revealed an apparent association between short duration gamma-ray bursts and a variety of host galaxies at moderate redshifts. However, observations of giant magnetar flares, as well as statistical analyses with a large sample of BATSE gamma-ray bursts indicate that at least some fraction of short GRBs originate in the local Universe. We have studied pre-Swift well-localized short GRBs to examine the possible association of these bursts with galaxies at low redshift. For the short bursts, we used BATSE and IPN localizations, and for the galaxies, we used the SDSS DR5 and PSCz surveys. We find no convincing association.
