We searched for mm CO absorption lines towards four QSOs, 0235 + 164, 0420 - 014, 1243 - 072, and 2128 - 123, at the absolute redshifts (0.4-0.65) of known heavy element absorption systems. Although no absorption features were detected, our upper limits on CO column density, less than 2 x 10 exp 15/sq cm, are low enough to rule out the existence along these lines of sight of any of the richer diffuse molecular clouds seen in the Galaxy.
