Microflares are frequent, short duration, energetically weak disturbances occuring in the non-radiatively heated regions of the Sun and possibly other magnetically active stars. They are thought to be the low energy extension of flares commonly seen on active dMe stars and may be a major source of heating of the chromospheres and corona of cool stars in general. In this program we propose to use the HSP to obtain rapid time sequences of the near UV flux through a wideband filter centered at 220nm. These observations will allow a study of flaring activity with energies more than two orders of magnitude less than that detectable from the ground. By obtaining data from 3 stars of different activity levels we hope to (a) detect the presence of microflaring activity and establish its characteristics as a function of stellar activity and (b) test the hypothesis that the microflares are responsible for coronal and chromospheric heating.
