FGS observations of a list of suspected binary asteroids are proposed. The targets have been chosen on the basis of an extensive analysis based mainly on peculiar photometric properties suggesting a possible binary nature. In particular, the components of these systems should have equilibrium shapes, and should derive from the collisional disruptions of single parent bodies. The existence of binary systems among asteroids is suggested by theoretical considerations, and has been recently confirmed by radar observations of near-Earth asteroids and direct imaging from the Galileo probe of asteroid 243 Ida. The size ratios, orbital periods and relative separations of the components of binary systems can give us important information on the mechanisms of formation of the systems, and on the overall process of collisional evolution of the asteroids. The HST FGS in interferometric mode would be uniquely capable to carry out this program.
