Three tests are proposed for identifying linear structures in the apparent distribution of galaxies. They are applied to the Lick Observatory counts and to the deep sample of galaxies near the South Galactic Pole. One test is designed so that numerous corrections need not be applied to the data, that numerous area elements with a deficiency of galaxies need not be considered, and that there is no danger of distortion due to large-scale fluctuations in the opacity of the interstellar medium. The conclusion is that statistical evidence for the occurrence of large-scale linear structures in the galaxy distribution is absent.
