The 17 cm hyperfine transition of neutral atomic sodium has been searched for unsuccessfully in a wide variety of atomic and molecular interstellar clouds. The results show that atomic sodium is indeed depleted in dense molecular clouds, as expected. Analysis of the chemical and ionization equilibrium shows that sodium cannot be hiding in the form Na II. It is argued that sodium-bearing molecules are also unimportant. Therefore, it is concluded that sodium resides in grains, from which it cannot be returned to the gas phase in any form.
