A highly sensitive search for the radio recombination lines H165 alpha and H166 alpha, which can be formed in an H II shell around an SNR, was conducted towards Cas A. An upper limit of 5 x 10 exp -5 is determined for the line optical depth. It can be accounted for if: (1) the H II shell around Cas A has a higher temperature than that of normal H II regions, and (2) the observed LF cutoff of the Cas A spectrum is not fully due to the interstellar medium.
