Methanol masers provide signposts to sites at the earliest stages of massive star formation, when the incipient star is embedded in a warm molecular core undergoing complex organic chemistry. This phase has only been studied so far in our Galaxy. Using the results from the methanol maser multibeam survey of the LMC to guide our aim, we propose to extend such investigations to another Galaxy, where star formation takes place in a lower metallicity environment. We will make use of the Mopra MOPS spectrometer to investigate whether the same rich molecular environment is associated with `hot molecular cores' - the early stages of massive star formation - in the LMC as it is in our Galaxy.
