A search has been undertaken for interstellar C2 in the near-infrared spectra of moderately and highly reddened early-type stars. In the case of Zeta Oph, an upper limit of 14 mA is reported for the equivalent width of the 1-0 R(0) line of the Phillips system. This upper limit is about a factor of 2 smaller than the upper limit to the equivalent width predicted by Black and Dalgarno (1977) on the basis of cosmochemical models.
